Young people – Strength and Energy for Youth through Movement

For a young person approaching adulthood, the amount of physical activity can decrease for a number of reasons. Research shows that as a young person moves to the second level of education, the amount of physical activity decreases and the amount of immobility increases. However, physical activity plays a major role in the overall well-being of young adults and their ability to cope with their studies.

When they become independent, many young adults have to learn a new everyday life that can take their attention away from everyday exercise. The fast pace of studying, a tight student budget and the demands of a new life situation can reduce the opportunities to move as before. On the other hand, they can also offer opportunities to start new hobbies and build your own active everyday life.

Few people think that in addition to health benefits, an active everyday life also supports endurance and mental well-being. Physical activity improves alertness and concentration, reduces depressive symptoms and improves physical self-identity, ability and stress management.

Doing things together is important for young people aged 16–18, as their brain is still developing in relation to social experiences and community.

Everyday exercise, breaks and sleep

Adulthood also means changes in physical activity, as the movement recommendations for adults apply to 18-year-old adolescents. In addition to active and muscle-maintaining exercise, the body and mind need light exercise, breaks from being inactive and restorative sleep.

Young people must dedicate time to sleeping

Sufficient sleep creates an important foundation for well-being, energy levels and self-care 5. When you’re tired, it’s harder to concentrate on your studies or work, get enough exercise or eat healthily. Too short a night’s sleep and poor sleep quality can also have a long-term negative impact on mood and even lead to exhaustion.

An active everyday life that looks like you

Physical activity doesn’t have to be just a run on the jogging track, it can and should be enjoyable moments that enrich our everyday lives in many ways. Basic everyday tasks also add movement to the day. The most important thing is to take breaks and take steps during the day.

What could a more active everyday life look for you?

Is it a long walk with an audiobook or a friend? Wandering around in nature at different times of the year? Relaxed everyday cycling or mountain biking in the nearby forest? Educational trips to the library? Yoga in the nature while listening to the birds sing? Wandering around in the city on a day off? Ice swimming on a winter day? Mind-expanding museum visits? Trips to second-hand stores? Taking your elderly neighbour out for a walk? Frisbee golf with a group of friends in the sun? Street basketball, football or ice hockey with friends?
